Often, there is a perception that it is too expensive to eat healthy food.

Here are some interesting facts and figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, who performed a survey on household expenditure in 2009/10:

  • The average Australian household spends more on junk food than fruit and vegetables.
  • The average Australian household spends more on fast food/takeaway than fruit and vegetables.
  • The average Australian household spends more on alcohol than fruit and vegetables.
  • Alcohol and tobacco combined account for nearly twice the spending on fruit and vegetables.
  • Households spend an average of $13.70 per week on vegetables and $9.60 a week on fresh fruit. In comparison, we seem to be quite happy to spend $30.50 on takeaway and $11.77 on confectionery.
  • Australians spend five times more on recreation than on fruit and vegetables.

And we wonder why we feel exhausted, stressed, can’t sleep, experience digestive upsets, frequent colds/infections, hormonal issues…..and the list goes on.
